March Staff Meeting Minutes

MUSC SANE Staff Meeting
Agenda
March 26, 2013

1.       People (Fostering employee pride & loyalty)
a.       Patient satisfaction kudos to Nancy and Whitney - great job on working with victims, you both have received very positive comments.  The work you did really made a difference!
b.    Please join us at Take Back the Night - it will be celebrated at Brittlebank Park on April 4 at 6pm.  Chief of Charleston Police Department will be there, so please join us with a good SANE turnout.

2.       Quality (Providing quality patient care in a safe environment)
a.       Competency Assessments – Will begin during the July 2013-May 2014 time period.  The results will be used to calculate your raise.  Your "home" unit managers will be asked to support the expectation of meeting your SANE competencies as well as other unit competencies.  Competencies will be broken down by 3 categories:
                                                               i.      Technical aspects (such as use of new camera system, evidence collection)
ii.      Critical thinking (such as decision making in unusual situations)
iii.      Interpersonal skills (ability to develop rapport with advocate, ED, patient)

The case studies we are doing are perfect examples of the unique area and issues that need to be addressed.  Ideas for competency assessments were discussed.  Please forward any suggestions to me.

b.      When giving Flagyl to patients for “take home” – Rx must be signed by ED physician and returned to Accu-dose.

c.       Peer Review - 5 cases were reviewed.  Please be aware that you each have cases that have been reviewed and you are welcome to see those results at any time.

3.       Growth (Growing to meet the needs of those we serve)
a.       Suspect exam process - we did 3 suspect exams in one week!  Clarification: can either do an exam under a search warrant or with patient consent.  When a search warrant is used, it is NOT necessary to also ask for a subpoena to receive those records.  The warrant entitles law enforcement to the evidence and records.  We are running short of kits, but will be getting more soon.  Kits will be placed in the "to go" bag.

FYI: the Spa night at janet's was cancelled due to insufficient interest:(

Neurobiology of Sexual Assault

Please take some time this weekend to watch/listen to this presentation from Dr Rebecca Campbell, sponsored by the National Institute of Justice, on the neurobiology of sexual assault.  It will reveal why (physiologically) some of our victims seem so calm, or unable to put all the pieces of the assault together, or give a consistent time frame for the assault.  Listen all the way to the end for a powerful statement from a survivor.  This is CRITICAL information that we must understand well enough to explain to our patients and our law enforcement partners.  As the health care providers, we have a unique opportunity and authority to use this information to improve the system of sexual violence response in our community.  It is our role, and it is essential.
