SANE Fun Night

Isn't it great that someone has volunteered to give the MUSC SANEs a little love!!  Melissa Milanik is going to provide us with a "Mary Kay makeover" on March 29.  Janette will be hosting us at her lovely home, and we will have some yummy treats and beverages.  This is a wonderful chance for us to just relax and enjoy each other in a beautiful surrounding.  In case you didn't know, Janet has acquired two household members.  She said they are so pretty in their black fur and diamond collars!  Maybe we will be graced with their little furry footsteps.  Perhaps some kitty pink nails for them too??

Did you know the Mary Kay Foundation has been a long time supporter of many initiatives that fight violence against women?  Every October the Foundation awards funds to a domestic violence shelter in every state.  In 2012 they supported over 150 shelters in the US.  This is a truly amazing organization that has a committment to break the cycle of violence, and puts up the money for the work.  Please join us, in appreciation, for all the company has done for our sisters, mothers, aunts and daughters.  You are not asked to buy anything, just be there! :)

Interviewing Sex Offenders

I have been working on the June 3-7, 2013 SANE/SART course, to be held at the Citadel.  One of the tasks is to review the reference list, and in doing so I came across an interesting article on the sex offender's thinking in the suspect interview process.  It reminded me of the opportunity I had several years ago to stand behind the two-way glass and observe a detective interview a suspect - and I was fascinated!  The detective clearly had a good grasp of the techniques in this article.  The first thing she said was "Now I know that you did not really do this and I am not worried about that.  This is just routine, can I get you anything, a cup of coffee, a glass of water?"  Of course being a naive nurse, I was clueless about the process that was unfolding.   Over the course of 1 hour she went from putting the man at ease to handcuffing him.  To this day she is one of my heroes.

So take a look at the article.  It describes the strategies to be used when interviewing sex offenders.  The author calls them "the five trademarks of the suspect interview":
1.  The offender will diminish the severity of the offense.
2. The offender will blame the victim to some degree.
3. The offender will attempt to control the interview.
4.  The offender will never give 100% of the information regarding the offense.
5. The offender will never talk about crimes the investigator does not already know about.

A copy is in the exam room, or you can locate it from the MUSC on line journal collection.

Have You Thought About SANE Certification?

Applications are now being accepted at IAFN for the SANE-A certification test.  The test is offered from May 1, 2013 through May 31, 2013.  You can look at the application, guidelines and get further information at:   http://www.iafn.org/displaycommon.cfm?an=4

I recommend each SANE consider taking the test.  Certification indicates you have achieved a high level of competence, can problem solve various situations in our specialty area.  Certification also reflects well upon the Medical Center, since it is acknowledged in the Magnet application.  It would be great to have 50% of our SANEs certified!
