January Staff Meeting Minutes

Thank you to all who attended the staff meeting last night.  The tootsie rolls were great, as was the info provided by SANE Ward.  Always helpful!  Good feedback on the peer review and good discussion on DV screening issues.  I really do appreciate it when the SANEs discuss our processes - and make recommendations!  It is such a good sign of a strong program:) .  Here are the minutes!!

In attendance: Brooke Bae, janet Ward, Nancy Hall, Cagney Lauderman, Stephanie Green, Whitney Simpson, Kathy Gill-Hopple.

January 29, 2013 Staff Meeting

1.       People (Fostering employee pride & loyalty)
a.       Thank you to Janette for hosting a terrific Christmas party.
We should get together for dinner and/or drinks.  need someone to set that in motion!

2.       Service (Serving the public with compassion, respect & excellence)
a.       Reminder: please use Patient Satisfaction Cards
Patient satisfaction cards in each order set with an envelope, to make it easy to hand to patient and ask for anonymous feedback.  Some cards have had nice comments, all patients have been very satisfied with the care they received.  It is important for us to be able to demonstrate our attentiveness to patient care this way, for the hospital and for any grant reports.  Please be sure to hand them out.

3.       Quality (Providing quality patient care in a safe environment)
a.       Homework - Stephanie, Nancy and Janet turned in their homework.  Others still need to do this.  Nancy emailed the next 2 months "homework" yesterday: one for Feb and one for March.  Please do them, this is good practice for injury assessment and documentation.

b.      Documentation draft - A new form has been developed to provide the SANE with an organized place to document physical assessment, vitals, genital injuries etc.  A draft will be in the exam room throughout Feb.  for you to make comments on.  This form will replace the MUSC genitalia assessment and be in addition to the SLED forms.  We discussed the importance of adding a DV assessment to it, and the implications of this from the hospital wide perspective.  The safety assessment has been added.

c.       PAR process - A new group of advocates has received training.  Hospital advocacy will continue, the hot line phone number is still being answered and patients can call there for concerns and questions.  That is all for now.

d.      Bilingual advocates - PAR has 2 bilingual advocates, and if needed the hot line number is the way to get in touch with them.  MUSC Interpreter Services is still available during regular business hours.

e.       Peer Review - Will be done monthly, we will see if we can do all charts or just a portion.  A  Mandatory Elements of the SANE chart "template" was passed out.
The completed individual peer review forms have been distributed.  So if you had a chart reviewed, you would have received a form by email.  We will do this every month - so eventually everyone will be reviewed.  Please feel free to comment on the process or the content of the review form, this is to help all of us!

4.       Growth (Growing to meet the needs of those we serve)
a.       Patient Support Group Project - We are working with the College of Nursing on an interim project to provide a support group for sexual assault patients.  We will be discussing this with PAR representatives to build collaboration to provide the best we can for our patients under the current circumstances.  It is still in the development phase, more info will be shared as it progresses.

b.      Community presentations - We are meeting with a different Law Enforcement Agency/jurisdiction each month, doing some brief training and asking officers to pass out our palm cards to anyone they believe may benefit from the info.  In January we presented to North Charleston Police Department Roll Call (all uniformed officers) and to the Charleston Police Department New Recruit class.  In Feb we will be at the Charleston County Sheriff's Office Roll Call.

5.       Anything you want to address?  No concerns, other than discussion on the DV assessment.

REMINDERS & UPDATES

The next staff meeting is January 29, 2013.  Please complete and bring the second case study.  We will begin our monthly peer review process, as a way to get more experience with looking at photos and reviewing documentation.  This is to be a LOW stress event, and will help all of us to get better at providing excellent care to our patients.

We are still expecting to get our new camera system in a month or so.  You will be required to attend a day long training session.  There will be plenty of notice on this, so stay tuned!

Several projects are underway to help our patients increase their access to our services.  In January we will be providing training to the new recruit class of the Charleston Police Department, and to the monthly  roll call of the North Charleston Police Department.

We have broken our "slow streak", and already done as many exams this month as all of December.  Thanks to everyone who is picking up their required call time, plus extra.  It truly does take all of us to make this department strong and a force to be reckoned with!  Does that make us all Wonder Women?

MUSC SANEs are the best!!
